The Lucumí faith is a religion of stories and story tellers.
At least, that’s what we all say; however, how many of us truly know the stories, called patakís, and the spiritual, emotional, moral, or ethical dilemmas they present?
Some of my fondest memories of my earliest days in this faith are of elder olorishas (priests and priestesses) speaking about our stories, tales as old as the human race; and I listened, enthralled, as they argued and debated their versions and the lessons they taught us about both the nature of Olódumare (God) and the orishas.
Beginning Saturday, October 20th, I am offering a lecture series about the patakís of the Lucumí faith. It is open to aleyos (outsiders to the faith), aborishas (unconsecrated adherents of the faith), and olorishas (priests and priestesses of the faith). The structure of this lecture series follows the olodu and odu of the diloggún, which is, essentially, our holy book – oral though it may be. As such, it is the right of everyone who practices this religion to know what that holy book and its stories are.
Each lecture will follow the theme of one odu chosen at random . . . by me! Each class will be a surprise when it comes to material! And during the course of an hour and a half, I will play the role of storyteller, reciting from the oral corpus of that odu. Some stories might be well-known; however, most of the stories will be obscure, and each class will be an educational but entertaining experience for everyone involved.
At the end of each story will be a chance for the listeners to comment, debate, and explore the moral and ethical dilemmas presented by each patakí.
The lecture series consists of twelve 1 ½ hour sessions, and the cost for the complete series is $150.00. Only 8 students/listeners are allowed in each class, and tuition is due upon registration. Lectures/Storytelling is done online through Skype, so anyone, anywhere, can participate. Please email me at email@example.com to register, or PM me on facebook.
